Who We Are?

Our Mission

General Hospital Alappuzha, located in the coastal town of Alappuzha (formerly known as Alleppey) in the southern state of Kerala, India, has a rich and significant history dating back over a century. It has been a cornerstone of healthcare in the region, serving the medical needs of the local population as well as people from neighboring areas.

HISTORY

The origins of the General Hospital Alappuzha date back to the late 19th century during the British colonial period. Alappuzha was a prominent town in the state of Travancore (one of the princely states in India before independence), and the growing population and urbanization led to the need for better healthcare services. The hospital was established in 1862 under the initiative of the then Maharaja of Travancore, Sri Chithira Thirunal Balarama Varma. It was designed to serve as a government-run healthcare facility for the region, providing medical care to the local population.

Growth and Development

Throughout the 20th century, the hospital gradually expanded its infrastructure and services. The hospital’s role was further solidified with the establishment of medical specialties, such as surgery, obstetrics and gynecology, pediatrics, and general medicine. In addition, various public health initiatives, including immunization programs and maternal and child care, were carried out by the hospital, which significantly improved public health in the region. In the post-independence era, with the establishment of Kerala as a state in 1956, there was a renewed emphasis on improving healthcare infrastructure. The Kerala state government took steps to upgrade the facilities and services at the General Hospital Alappuzha, aligning with the state’s vision to provide affordable and quality healthcare to all its citizens. The hospital became an important part of the state’s public healthcare system.

Modernization and Specialization

In the 1980s and 1990s, the hospital underwent major renovations and modernization efforts. New buildings were added, and specialized departments were set up to cater to more advanced medical needs. This period saw the hospital evolve into a more comprehensive medical centre , with the introduction of modern diagnostic facilities, surgical procedures, and treatment methods. The hospital also began serving as a teaching and training ground for medical students, nurses, and other healthcare professionals.

In addition, several new specialties, including cardiology, orthopaedics, nephrology, and ophthalmology, were introduced. This allowed the hospital to cater to a wider range of medical conditions, attracting patients not only from Alappuzha but also from the neighbouring districts of Kottayam, Pathanamthitta and Kollam.

Current Status

Today, General Hospital Alappuzha is one of the leading government hospitals in Kerala. It serves as a referral centre for various medical conditions and is known for providing affordable healthcare to people. The hospital is equipped with state of the art medical technologies and has a wide range of departments and services.

The hospital plays a significant role in Kerala’s healthcare system, offering both inpatient and outpatient services. It also runs specialized clinics, conduct surgeries, and provides emergency care. As a teaching hospital, it collaborates with several medical colleges in the region to train healthcare professionals. The hospital also plays an active role in public health programs, such as disease prevention, maternal health, and child welfare.

The hospital continues to innovate, embracing new medical technologies and research while staying true to its founding mission of providing quality healthcare for all.
